Our History

In 1981, Hill N Dale Christian Church was formed shortly after Southland Christian Church moved from this church building to Jessamine County (outside Lexington). A number of families wanted to ensure that a strong Christian church remained in the Southwest Lexington/Hill N Dale neighborhood.

Wayne Holcomb was called as Hill N Dale’s first minister, and he preached here for nearly two decades. In 1998, he was succeeded by David Welsh, who preached at Hill N Dale for eight years, until the 2007 calling of Senior Minister Phil Roberts, who served five years. Dr. Robbie Phillips served from 2012-2018. A number of outstanding associate ministers have also served at Hill N Dale over its three decades.

Hill N Dale has always been a member of the independent Christian Churches and Churches of Christ, a branch of the Restoration Movement dating back to the ’Second Great Awakening,’ which largely began in 1801 at the nearby Cane Ridge Revival site close to Paris, KY. As a Restoration movement church, Hill N Dale Christian Church seeks to focus on simple, New Testament Christianity, taking the early church described in Acts as our inspiration.

They committed themselves to the teaching of the apostles, the life together, the common meal, and the prayers….And all the believers lived in a wonderful harmony, holding everything in common…worship in the Temple followed by meals at home, every meal a celebration, exuberant and joyful, as they praised God. People in general liked what they saw. Every day their number grew as God added those who were saved.
